Jahvid Best Announced As 2009 Doak Walker Award Candidate
Aug. 4, 2009
BERKELEY - California's Jahvid Best was announced today as a candidate for the 2009 Doak Walker Award. The honor is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.
Consistently mentioned among the nation's top Heisman Trophy candidates, Best is the country's leading returning rusher and a 2009 first-team preseason All-American. Last year, he ran for 1,580 rushing yards to record the second-best season ever at Cal. His 8.1 yards per carry in 2008 set a new single-season school record while his 15 rushing touchdowns tied a mark. Best was a first team All-Pac-10 selection as a running back a year ago after earning the same honor on special teams as a true freshman in 2007.
'I am excited to be named as a candidate for the Doak Walker Award,' said Best. 'This is a prestigious honor, and I will do my best throughout the season to compete to earn it.'
'This is another tremendous honor for Jahvid,' added Cal head football coach Jeff Tedford. 'It is certainly well-deserved, but what impresses me the most is that despite all of the recognition he has received heading into this season his focus remains in the right place, and that's on our team.'
Cal has been ranked as high as No. 9 (Phil Steele) in national team preseason rankings released by college football preview publications. The Golden Bears were selected to finish second in the Pac-10 in an annual preseason poll of media who regularly cover the league.
The Golden Bears open their 2009 campaign with a nationally televised ESPN2 contest against Maryland at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 5 (7:00 p.m., PT). Cal fans are encouraged to participate in a Blue Out of Memorial Stadium in the season-opener. The best way to show your support is to pick up the Cal 2009 Football Official Game Day Tee.
