USA Softball's Summer Dominance Continues

Aug. 4, 2009

TUCSON -- Five current or former Cats have been part of the dominant performance the U.S. National Team has displayed over the past week.

Jennie Finch, Jenae Leles and Brittany Lastrapes - part of the Japan Cup squad - helped lead the Americans to the tournament title in Sendai City over the weekend. The four victories in the tournament kept the team's undefeated mark intact.

Finch was nearly untouchable offensively and defensively in the tournament, receiving Most Valuable Player honors. The La Mirada, Calif. native drew two walks and picked up the win in an 11-3 win over Australia on Friday, hit a three-run shot in a 10-2 win against Chinese Taipei on Saturday, and held a no-no through six against Japan in the Championship Game on Sunday. She struck out eight, allowed one hit and plated the only two RBI of the game as the U.S. took the win, 2-0, and the title from host Japan.

Leles finished the weekend with two hits - including a three-run bomb - two runs, a walk and a hit by pitch to her credit.

Lastrapes, seeing her first action at the National Team level, nabbed two RBI on a triple against Australia. She later scored, then drew a walk.

Across the globe, Caitlin Lowe and K'Lee Arredondo have led the Pan American Qualifier team to a perfect 5-0 start in Maracay, Venezuela.

Lowe has done her usual damage offensively, picking up at least one hit and a run in all five games thus far. The star center fielder posted two doubles in a 21-0 win over Ecuador on Sunday, going 3-for-4 and touching home three times. She picked up two more RBI yesterday in a 22-0 win against Panama, then legged out another double against the Antilles later in the day.

The lone Arizona native of the Cats on the U.S. squad, Arredondo singled in a pinch-hitting situation in an 11-0 win against Colombia on Friday, went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI against Ecuador, then singled and scored against the Antilles.

The Pan American Qualifier team is scheduled to take on El Salvador and the Dominican Republic in a doubleheader today.

Did You Know: K'Lee Arredondo has a few new pictures of herself. The seven-feet-by-two-feet images can be seen hanging from light posts around campus, most notably on Sixth St., Campbell Ave., Speedway Blvd. and National Championship Dr. Arredondo was chosen as the featured softball athlete for the posters, part of the athletic department's year-long marketing campaign.

Arredondo, on her experiences with the National Team in Venezuela:'Playing with some of the best softball players in the world and getting to play against so many other countries has been a great experience! It has also been an experience being in another country and seeing how other people live their lives. It has been fun so far.'
