Bryan Anger On 2009 Ray Guy Award Watch List
Aug. 5, 2009
BERKELEY - California's Bryan Anger was one of nine punters selected today to the 2009 Ray Guy Award watch list. The award recognizes the nation's top college punter and is presented by the Greater Augusta Sports Council. The winner will be honored in December in conjunction with the organization's Medals of Excellence in Sports Program.
Anger was the only freshman in the nation to be named a semifinalist for the 2008 Ray Guy Award and is a first-team preseason All-American in 2009. Last year, he was also named a first-team Freshman All-American (College Football News, Sporting News Today, Rivals.com) after ranking third in the Pac-10, No. 18 nationally and fifth on Cal's all-time single-season list with a 43.1 yards per punt average. Anger set a school single-game record in 2008 when he averaged a Pac-10 season-high 60.2 yards per punt on four boots against Stanford, including two of the longest six punts in school history with one going 76 yards to set a new Big Game record.
'I am excited to be on the Ray Guy Award watch list at the start of the season,' said Anger. 'Being a semifinalist last year as a freshman was quite an honor and this year I'm looking forward to doing even better.'
Cal has been ranked as high as No. 9 (Phil Steele) in 2009 national team preseason rankings released by college football preview publications. The Golden Bears were selected to finish second in the Pac-10 this year in an annual preseason poll of media who regularly cover the league.
The Golden Bears open their 2009 campaign with a nationally televised ESPN2 contest against Maryland at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 5 (7:00 p.m., PT). Cal fans are encouraged to participate in a Blue Out of Memorial Stadium in the season-opener. The best way to show your support is to pick up the Cal 2009 Football Official Game Day Tee.
