Barry Qualifies for U.S. Amateur
Aug. 6, 2009
Oregon State men's golfer Mike Barry qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship for the second year in a row last week. Barry, who sat out last season after transferring from the University of San Diego, will be part of the U.S. Am field Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Barry, a senior-to-be from Medford, Ore., shot a 1-under 143 to tie for first with Lucas Bogdan, at the par 72 Illahe Hills Country Club in Salem, Ore.
After shooting a 2-over 74 in the first round to tie for 16th, Barry had to come from behind in the final 18 shooting a 69, which tied for the third-best score of the day. He tallied four birdies in the final round including the par-5 14th and 16th, the par-4 seventh and the par-3 17th. Possibly the most important holes for Barry's second round came when he birdied the seventh and 14th holes after having taken bogeys on both in the morning round. His final round also included only one bogey, which came on the par-4 sixth.
Fellow senior-to-be Tyler Simpson (Portland, Ore.) just missed qualifying for the U.S. Am losing a playoff at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Juniper Golf Club in Redmond, Ore. Simpson shot a 5-under 139 to tie for second with Jake Dukeminier. Simpson and teammate Brandon Taylor (Corvallis, Ore.), who used a pair of second round eagles to finish fourth (74, 66 - 140), will both be alternates for the U.S. Am. OSU freshman-to-be Nick Sherwood (Albany, Ore.) also played in the Redmond qualifier firing a second round 69 to finish 20th.
Taylor, who will be a junior this season, has played well all summer with his highlight coming last month when he earned a second place finish at the Oregon Open Invitational. Taylor's score of 15-under 201 gave him top honors among amateurs as only Brian Nosler, a professional, finished ahead of him with a tournament record 18-under 198. Taylor tied Jeff Coston, a two-time winner of the tournament, who also a professional.
