Cardinal Ranked Fifth In Preseason Volleyball Magazine Poll

Aug. 6, 2009

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's volleyball team came in at No. 5 in the 2009 Volleyball Magazine Preseason Poll released today. Two-time defending national champion Penn State took the top spot, while Texas, Nebraska and Washington rounded out the top five.

Stanford returns 10 letterwinners from last year's team that made a run to the NCAA championship match and claimed a third consecutive Pac-10 title. The veterans include two-time All-American outside hitter Alix Klineman, as well as returning starters Janet Okogbaa, Cassidy Lichtman and Gabi Ailes.

The squad also includes four talented newcomers - Karissa Cook (Santa Cruz, Calif.), Charlotte Brown (Walnut Creek, Calif.), Hayley Spelman (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Hannah Benjamin (San Diego, Calif.). Together, the group was deemed the third-best recruiting class in the nation and includes three Volleyball Magazine top-50 recruits and three U.S. Junior National Team members.

Stanford begins the season on Aug. 28 against LSU at the Notre Dame Invitational.
