Aug. 6, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. - Senior defensive end Erik Lorig has been named one of 30 preseason candidates for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award, given annually to the top defensive end in college football.
Now in its eighth season, the Ted Hendricks Award is named in honor of college football's first three-time first team All-American. Following a storied career at University of Miami, Fla., Hendricks went onto enjoy a 15-year professional career which included four Super Bowl victories, eight Pro Bowl selections and inductions into the College and Pro Football Hall of Fames. It is in the spirit of Hendricks' aggressive style of play, winning attitude and determination that the Defensive End of the Year Award is presented.
On field performance, exceptional winning attitude, leadership abilities, contributions to school and community and academic preparedness are some of the criteria used to determine the recipient of the award. Members of the national media, head coaches, professional scouts and former winners are included on the voting committee.
Lorig, a fifth-year senior, has started 20 of 24 games over the last two seasons and has registered 82 career tackles, including 13.5 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks.
