Kono and Lua Advance to Quarterfinals at USWAm

Two UCLA players advanced and one was eliminated in match play Thursday at the 109th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Old Warson CC in St. Louis.

Sophomore Stephanie Kono and incoming freshman Tiffany Lua advanced to the quarterfinals on Friday, while senior Sydnee Michaels lost in the third round.

Both Kono and Lua won late in their matches. Lua, all square with Michelle Shin of Cape Coral, Fl., birdied the 18th to win her third match of the week. Lua meets Jessica Korda of Bradenton, Fl on Friday.

Kono, 1-up against Allie White of Lancaster, OH, made a par at the 18th while White bogeyed to win 2-up. She will meet USC's Jennifer Song in the quarterfinals Friday.

In second round matches on Thursday morning, Kono defeated Canada's Stephanie Sherlock, 2&1, Lua beat Brooke Beeler of Butler, IL, 3&1 and Michaels won 3&2 against Whitney Neuhauser of Charlottesville, VA.

Michaels lost 3&2 to Jennifer Johnson of La Quinta, Calif. in the third round.
