Less Than One Month Til First Match
Aug. 6, 2009
TUCSON - The Arizona volleyball team is less than one month away from its first match of the season. This year the team will be on the road to begin non-conference play, traveling to Louisville on Aug. 28 to face the Cardinals.
The team will hold camp at the Richard Jefferson Gym and McKale Center for the next two weeks as the players go through heavy conditioning and practice sessions. On Aug. 22, McKale Center will host the annual Red-Blue inter-squad scrimmage.
This season Arizona has a strong core of returning veterans. Tiffany Owens, Whitney Dosty and Paige Weber along with Jacy Norton and Stephanie Snow will look to lead the Cats into postseason play. The team posted a record of 16-14 (6-12 in conference) and just missed out on a bid to play in the NCAA tournament.
Head coach Dave Rubio believes having all five starters plus the starting libero back for 2009 will help the team achieve its goals.
'Any time you bring experience into a season it helps you and it will be a valuable resource all season,' said Rubio. 'This is a group that has been playing and starting together for a while and it should show on the court.'
Arizona opens its home slate of matches Sept. 4 against Nevada in the Wildcat Classic.
