The Golden Bears are coming off of the program's 23rd winning season in 2008 and will expect nothing but the same in 2009. Cal made it to postseason play for the fifth time in program history last year, but lost to No. 7 Florida in a close 2-1 decision. The Bears will be reloading in 2009, after losing six starters, but will still have the offensive fire power of junior Alex Morgan. Morgan led the team in goals with nine and also has experience playing with the U.S. National Team after playing with the U-20 squad. Junior defender/midfielder Megan Jesolva has also played at the national level and is fresh off a trip to England with the U-23 team. Jesolva will be a key outside back to shore up the defense for the Bears with the loss of strong defender Nkechi Kanu to graduation. Cal will be a young team in 2009, with only three seniors, one of which is goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini who was the regular keeper in 2008, making 44 saves.

    • Aug. 28 - California at Portland, 7 p.m. PT
    • Sept. 4 & 6 - 15th Annual Cal Invitational (featuring Texas and Texas A&M)
    • Nov. 8 - California at Stanford, 1 p.m. PT (Fox Soccer Channel & FSN-Regional)
The Golden Bears travel to perennial powerhouse Portland in the second game of the season. They host two tough teams at their 15th Annual Cal Invitational on Sept. 4 and 6 in Big-12 powerhouses Texas and Texas A&M. However, the marquee match-up of the year will be at traditional-rival Stanford on the last day of the season. The game will be televised nationally and can be viewed on both the Fox Soccer Channel and Regional Fox Sports Net. That match-up could potentially decide the Pac-10 Champion, while Cal will be looking to avenge its 3-0 loss against the Cardinal in 2008.

    13 • Alex Morgan
JR • Forward • Diamond Bar, Calif.

Cal's leading goal scorer in 2008 with nine goals and tops in the points column with 20, Morgan will look to continue her stellar career in 2009. Morgan was a first team All-Pac-10 selection in 2008, the only Golden Bear to receive the honor. Her experience with the U.S. National Team playing with the U-17 and U-20 squads brings great insight and leadership to this Cal team. Morgan competed for the U-20 team in Mexico at CONCACAF qualifying for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup where she had a goal and three assists in tournament as a starter. As a freshman in Berkeley, Morgan received Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 nods and was a Pac-10 All-Freshman pick. She has great speed and is a threat to finish with either foot.
