Five Gymnasts Earn Scholastic All-America Honors
Aug. 10, 2009
Five Oregon State gymnasts were among those recently named 2009 Alpha Factor Scholastic All-Americans by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W).
Seniors D'Anna Piro (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Johnnie Rae Schmelzer (Talent, Ore.) and freshmen Adonica Glatt (West Linn, Ore.), Stephanie McGregor (Calgary, Alberta) and Olivia Vivian (Perth, Australia) represent OSU on this year's list.
A gymnast must have maintained a 3.50 grade point average for the entire 2008-09 school year to receive Scholastic All-American status.
Piro and McGregor were among 67 gymnasts nationwide to post 4.0 GPAs during the 2008-09 school year.
Piro, who double-majored in exercise and sport science as well as business administration in OSU's Honors College earned the award for the fifth time in her career, becoming just the second OSU gymnast to accomplish the feat.
The award is a first for each of the other recipients - Glatt (nutrition), McGregor (bioengineering), Schmelzer (psychology) and Vivian (exercise and sport science).
Alpha Factor is one of the leading gymnastics apparel manufacturers in the world and the official sponsor for all NACGC/W awards for coaches and student-athletes.
