Incoming Women's Basketball Freshmen Complete BEST Bridge Program
Aug. 10, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - With the start of the 2009-10 season approximately three months away, freshmen members of the Oregon State women's basketball team have been in Corvallis to participate in the BEST Bridge program.
The program is designed to help OSU student-athletes adapt to the college environment and balance their time with the demands of basketball and academics. It's open to all-student athletes and as such, helps each get familiar with other incoming athletes on campus.
'Having our incoming freshmen participate in the BEST Bridge program provides an outstanding opportunity for these young women to be introduced to life as a college athlete,' head coach LaVonda Wagner said. 'They are able to get a jump start on their academic careers and athletic experiences, as well as bond with their teammates and classmates.'
This year's BEST Bridge experience recently ended, on Friday, after three-and-a-half weeks. The program gives each student-athletes six credits of coursework and provides experiences outside of the classroom, such as a whitewater rafting trip on the McKenzie River.
'Being involved with the Bridge program this summer was a great experience,' Haiden Palmer said. 'I am now prepared for the fall term and I know what to expect. It was also great to meet other incoming athletes. I had a lot of fun and made some new friends.'
'I thought the Bridge program was awesome,' Kate Lanz said. 'It allowed me to meet other incoming student-athletes and establish new friendships before the school year even began. It also enabled me to become familiar with the campus and resources that are available to me throughout the year.'
The program coincides with summer school and summer conditioning for the team, which includes all women's basketball players for the upcoming season. They were able to spend approximately five weeks together, with that summer culminating this week. At the conclusion of the summer session, members of the 2009-10 squad will return home for a short break before returning for preseason conditioning.
