Four Dawgs Help Lead Newport To Title

Aug. 11, 2009

Four current Husky baseball players were a part of the Newport (R.I.) Gulls' run to the championship of New England Collegiate Baseball League, which wrapped up Monday night.

First baseman Troy Scott, shortstop David Bentrott and pitchers Geoff Brown and Andrew Kittredge all played major roles in the Gulls' title run.

Newport beat New Bedford (Mass.) two games to none in the opening round and then went three games (best-of-three in each case) with Sanford (Maine) and Vermont in the semi-finals and finals.

Scott, a junior from Auburn, batted .400 with three doubles, a homer and a team-high 10 runs batted in, in the eight postseason games. In Monday's 12-6 win in the title-deciding game, he was 2-for-3 with a homer and five runs batted in.

Bentrott, a junior from Maple Valley, hit .292 in the playoffs.

Brown, a junior from Mill Creek, picked up wins over New Bedford and Sanford. He was 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA, a save and 15 strikeouts in 10 innings in the playoffs.

Kittredge, a sophomore from Spokane, earned a victory in the final series opener over Vermont. He fanned 19 in 12.2 innings during the playoffs.
