Morgan Named to Herrmann Watch List
Aug. 11, 2009
BERKELEY - California women's soccer junior forward Alex Morgan is a candidate for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday. The award is considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, and its recipients are selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
'Alex is very much deserving of being in this category amongst the other fantastic players in the country,' Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. 'Her success is due to hard work from Alex and her teammates and we wish her every success.'
Last season, Morgan finished atop the Cal squad in multiple categories - points (23), goals (9), shots (76) and shots on goal (39). She was named to the Soccer Buzz All-West second team and was a Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention selection. Her season high with the Bears in 2008 came when she notched a hat trick in the 5-1 victory against Oregon.
The Diamond Bar, Calif., native scored the eventual gamewinner to help the U.S. Under-20 national team to gold medals at the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup on Dec. 7 for her fourth goal of the tournament. She won the Bronze Ball as the tournament's third-best player and the Bronze Shoe as the third-leading scorer.
A list of 15 semifinalists is selected by a coaches committee in November, with three finalists announced in early December. They will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., for a news conference on Jan. 8, when the winner will be announced with a presentation banquet following.
