Mustain, Barkley Throw TD Passes In First Scrimmage
Aug. 14, 2009
Junior quarterback Mitch Mustain completed 14-of-16 passes for 154 yards with a touchdown and first-year freshman quarterback Matt Barkley threw a touchdown and ran for another to highlight the USC football team's first intrasquad scrimmage of 2009 fall camp on Friday (Aug. 14) on campus.
Mustain, who hit his first 8 passes, fired a 28-yard scoring strike to freshman wide receiver De'Von Flournoy. Barkley, who has been working with the first team while sophomore Aaron Corp is out with a leg injury, was 10-of-17 for 120 yards and an interception. He threw a 19-yard TD to junior wide receiver David Ausberry and then scored on an 8-yard draw on the final play of the scrimmage.
The day's other scores came on a 2-yard run by redshirt freshman tailback Curtis McNeal, who ran for 59 yards on 7 carries overall, and a 22-yard field goal by senior Jordan Congdon on the opening drive.
Sophomore linebacker Shane Horton led the defense with 5 tackles, while senior linebacker Nick Garratt, sophomore safety Drew McAllister, soph defensive end Malik Jackson and junior safety Robert Erickson each had 4 stops. Senior safety Will Harris had an interception and junior defensive end Everson Griffen had a sack.
'Across the board, everyone played hard and we got to see everyone play today,' said ninth-year head coach Pete Carroll. 'We wanted to see Barkley play a lot. He handled himself beautifully and has made a tremendous impression this first week. He showed he can handle this. Mustain had a great day, with mostly conservative throws. McNeal looked real good running, but we didn't run well besides that. The defense was really solid, although I was disappointed we didn't bring more pressure, but the offensive line had a lot to do with that.'
Seven-time defending Pac-10 champion USC opens its 2009 season on Sept. 5 when it hosts San Jose State.
