Pac-10 Coaches Pick Washington as 2009 Volleyball Preseason Favorite

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON was voted the volleyball preseason favorite to win the Pac-10 in a vote by the Conference coaches. CALIFORNIA was tabbed second, while three-time defending Pac-10 Champion STANFORD was picked third.
The Huskies, which tallied 90 points and nine first-place votes, are coming off a season in which they finished second in the Pac-10 with 15-3 record and 27-5 record overall. Last season, they advanced to the Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament, falling 3-2, to Nebraska.
The Golden Bears picked up 80 points and the only other first-place vote, and placed second in the poll. Cal, which went 13-5 in Conference play last season, finished third in the Pac-10 and was one of three Pac-10 teams to advance to the Regional Final in the NCAA Tournament last season where it fell, 3-0, to eventual national champion Penn State.
Eleven-time and three-time defending Pac-10 Champion Stanford earned 74 points to take third. The Cardinal won the Conference title last season with a 17-1 record and 31-4 overall mark. Stanford made it to the national championship game for the third-consecutive year in 2008, but fell, 3-0, to Penn State.
UCLA picked up 62 points for fourth place just ahead of USC who nabbed 60 votes for fifth place. OREGON got 48 points for sixth, while ARIZONA garnered 42 points for seventh. ARIZONA STATE received 34 points for eighth barely edging out OREGON STATE which finished with 31 points. WASHINGTON STATE was 10th in the poll with 19 points
The 2009 Pac-10 women's volleyball season kicks off on Fri., Aug. 28, when all 10 teams will be in action.
