A bright spot for the Cardinal last season was the defense, as it never allowed more than two goals in a single match, the only team in the Pac-10 to accomplish that feat. This season, head coach Bret Simon should have a stout defense on The Farm. The key will be Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 senior goalkeeper John Moore who ranked third in the Conference in saves with 62 last season. First team All-Pac-10 and 2009 Hermann Trophy candidate Bobby Warshaw, Stanford's leading scorer last year, is slated to move to a more defensive role in 2009. Fellow first team All-Pac-10 senior midfielder Michael Strickland will also play an integral role this year for the Cardinal. The Cardinal welcome the No. 4-rated recruiting class by Soccer America. Highlighting the class is the California Gatorade Boy's Soccer Player of the Year forward Adam Jahn. Jahn is a member of the U-18 U.S. National Team and led his high school, Jesuit High School in Sacramento, to a 27-1-1 record last season scoring 17 goals and 15 assists. In addition, TopDrawerSoccer.com's top-ranked recruit, Dersu Abolfathi, is set to join the Cardinal after spending the last year and a half with the U-18 academy of the MLS club Los Angeles Galaxy. Both players are expected to immediately contribute to the Stanford attack.

Last season when San Francisco and Stanford met in the Bay Area Classic, it was the Cardinal which was victorious, winning 1-0. In 2009, the Dons were rated No. 22 by TopDrawerSoccer.com's preseason poll and the rematch is slated for Sept. 20 in the Bay Area Classic hosted by the Cardinal. Stanford opens Conference play at California, ranked No. 4 by TopDrawerSoccer.com. The Golden Bears defeated the Cardinal twice last season, at Stanford, 1-0, in overtime and, 1-0, in Berkeley.

    14 • Bobby Warshaw
    JR • Midfield/Forward • Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Warshaw is an extremely gifted passer with an exceptional ability to read the game and supply the right play to create opportunities for his teammates and himself to score goals. He has a passion for soccer that is reflected in his tireless work ethic. A 2009 Hermann Trophy Watch List candidate who was Stanford's leading scorer last year, he is slated to move to a more defensive role this season. A first team All-Pac-10 and first team Pac-10 All-Academic team honoree with a 3.66 GPA a year ago, he led the team in points (8) and was tied for second in assists (2) as a sophomore. In two seasons with the Cardinal, he has netted eight goals and tallied four assists for 20 points.
