Ann Detmer Named Assistant Cross Country Coach
Aug. 17, 2009
Ann Detmer, who was the 2008 Most Valuable Player for the Wisconsin track & field team and helped the Badgers qualify for three NCAA Women's Cross Country Championships, has been named assistant coach for the California cross country program, Golden Bear head coach Tony Sandoval announced Monday.
'I am so pleased to be able to have Ann Detmer join our staff,' Sandoval said. 'She comes highly recommended to me by several coaches as a rising star in the profession. She has spent her whole life surrounded by outstanding athletes, and her brother, Joe, is a national-caliber decathlete. Ann was a key figure in three Wisconsin teams that qualified for the NCAA championships in cross country, and she will be a valuable addition to our program.'
Detmer spent last season as a volunteer coach with the women's team at Wisconsin, where she assisted with training and individual workouts and coordinating recruiting efforts. In cross country, the Badgers finished second at the Big Ten meet and placed 19th at the 2008 NCAA championships. Detmer helped coach distance runners to three All-Big Ten honors in cross country, as well as two Big Ten track & field titles (3000m, 5000m). In addition, Gwen Jorgensen garnered All-America notice at the 2008 NCAA cross country meet.
Captain of the 2007-08 Wisconsin cross country and track & field squads, Detmer earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the mile at the 2008 NCAA indoor track meet. She was a three-time NCAA qualifier in the mile and 1500 meters. In cross country, Detmer was part of three NCAA qualifying teams, helping the Badgers to a best of fourth place at 2006 nationals. In 2007, she received the cross country squad's Most Improved Award.
As a high school runner, Detmer won the Wisconsin state championship in the 800 meters competing for Lodi High School. Detmer has a twin brother, Patrick, who is the wrestling coach at Xavier HS in Appleton, Wis.
Detmer earned her bachelor's degree in biology and was a two-time Academic All-American and three-time Big Ten All-Academic selection. She has worked as an associate research specialist with the O'Connor AIDS Vaccine Lab and the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center Genetic Services Unit. Detmer has co-authored three manuscripts that have been published the Journal of Virology, Immunogenetics and Nature Medicine.
With the hiring of Detmer, Magdalena Lewy will serve as a volunteer coach for the Bears in 2008-09 after being a fulltime assistant coach last year. The change in responsibilities will allow Lewy, who represented the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the marathon, to better concentrate on her training and goal to make the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
'I am glad that Magda will be able to keep an association with our program,' Sandoval said. 'I am supportive of her and her goals. She will always be a Bear.'
