Meet Markus Wheaton

Aug. 17, 2009

Freshman standout Markus Wheaton looks to make an immediate impact at receiver and returner for Oregon State. The two-time 400m national champion is transitioning his speed from the track to the football field by beating cornerbacks in a foot race towards the end zone.

Why did you choose Oregon State?

'The family atmosphere of course, I'm sure a lot of people say that. That's the main reason, the coaching staff and the people here.'

What was it about the coaching staff drew you to Oregon State?

'Coach Cavanaugh and Coach Locey came down to see me and they were cool people. As well as coaching on the field they're good people off the field.'

Where do you see yourself fitting into Oregon State football?

'Hopefully I can come in right away and play, that's what the plan is, if I don't I'm pretty sure I'll do something next year. I want to be a returner and hopefully I'll back up James (Rodgers).'

How fast would you say you are?

'I don't know. It depends on who you compare me too.'

Have you gone against some of the guys in practice?

'Yeah, the DB's.'

How would you say you do?

'I would say I'm on the good end.'

How has your transition to Oregon been?

'It was hard leaving my family behind because I'm not there to help them out with their troubles but it's been fun to get to know these guys here and they've welcomed me with open arms.'

How much do you know and hear about your cousin Kenny Wheaton's pick at Oregon?

'I hear about it a lot. People always ask me about it. I don't think anything of it because it has nothing to do with me. I'm going to try and do my own thing.'

Did that weigh into choosing a school?

'No. Not at all.'

What do you do in your free time?

'I like to play ping-pong and basketball. My roommate and I are pretty close so we go play basketball all the time. That's pretty much it.'

What is your favorite sports team?

'Cowboys, I love the Cowboys. Kenny actually played for the Cowboys and I used to go to a lot of his games so I love the Cowboys.'

Do you have a biggest sports achievement?

'When I was 14 and 15 years old I won nationals in track and field in the 400 meter, back-to-back years actually.'

How was that experience?

'I didn't think anything of it at the time but now that I look back on it, it was a pretty good achievement.'

Do you have a favorite athlete?

'Not really but there are a couple that stand out like LeBron James, Randy Moss, Reggie Bush and Adrian Peterson. They're just fun to watch.'

Do you base your game off anyone else?

'No. I try not to. I try and do my own thing.'

Do you have a favorite sports movie?

'Friday Night Lights is the first one that popped to mind.'
