Trojans Earn US Open Wildcard
Aug. 17, 2009
USC sophomore Daniel Nguyen and incoming freshman JT Sundling combined forces last weekend at the USTA Boys' 18s National Hard Court Championship and came away as the doubles champions at the tourney. The Trojan pair's 7-6 (2), 6-3 win in the title match secured a wildcard entry for the duo into the upcoming US Open.
Competing in the 18s championship in Kalamazoo, Mich., Nguyen and Sundling powered through their competition before coming up against Sekou Coker Bangoura and Nathan Pasha in the final. After a tight first set, Nguyen and Sundling pinned up a solid second set to claim the doubles crown. Nguyen and Sundling will now set their sights on the main draw of the US Open, which begins August 31 in New York.
Nguyen and Sundling are both set to start up their USC tennis action next month. An Oxnard, Calif., native, Nguyen was a key member of last season's NCAA Championship team, and Sundling joins the Trojan roster for 2009-10 as a freshman out of Thousand Oaks, Calif.
