Coming into the 2009 season, the Stanford Cardinal are riding a string of three Pac-10 titles, three 30-win seasons, three national semifinal appearances and three trips to the national championship match. Stanford’s recent success is not by accident as the Cardinal have accumulated more NCAA crowns, won more NCAA Tournament matches, made more national semifinal appearances and been in the national championship match more times than any program in the nation. However, if the Cardinal expect to make it to the national title game for a fourth-consecutive year, it will need to replace two-time AVCA National Player of the Year Foluke Akinradewo. Junior outside hitter Alix Klineman is one of the most respected hitters in the country, leading the team in kills 415 (3.61 kps) last season. Two-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year John Dunning welcomes another talented recruiting class that has three players on the Volleyball Magazine’s Fab 50 list - middle blocker Charlotte Brown, setter Karissa Cook and outside hitter Hayley Spelman.

    • Sept. 12 - Stanford at Hawai'i, 7:00 p.m. HT
    • Oct. 10 - Washington at Stanford, 7:00 p.m. PT (FSN)
The Cardinal's matchup at Hawai'i at the Honolulu Advertiser Volleyball Challenge promises to be a great matchup. Both teams are ranked in Volleyball Magazine’s preseason top 10, with Stanford at No. 5 and Hawai'i at No. 7. The interesting stat here is with all the success the Cardinal have had, the Rainbow Wahine are the only team the Cardinal have a losing record against all-time, 13-17. However, the last time both teams met, the Cardinal defeated Hawai'i, 3-0, to advance to its third-consecutive NCAA semifinal game. Another great matchup on Fox Sports Net pairs the Huskies traveling to Stanford. If the Huskies want to win the Pac-10 crown, they will have to go through the three-time defending Pac-10 Champions.

    10 • Alix Klineman
JR • Outside Hitter • Manhattan Beach, Calif.

In 2008, Klineman was named an AVCA first team All-American, andfirst team All-American and an All-Pacific Region pick by Volleyball Magazine. She was also an All-Pac-10 selection for the second-straight year, named to the NCAA All-Tournament team two years in a row and was a Academic All-Pac-10 honorable mention. Klineman appeared in 115 matches for the Cardinal last year and led the team with 415 kills (3.61 kps), while ranking among the Conference’s top 10 in both kills (6th) and points (7th). She set personal career highs in kills (28), attempts (61), aces (2, 10 times), and hitting percentage (.615). One of the most respected hitters in the country, she should easily pound her 1,000th-career kill before the Pac-10 season even begins.
