Verner's Views - The Second Week of Camp
Aug. 20, 2009
So, I have been in camp for another week. We are in the thick of double days with many scrimmages and competition everywhere on the field. It has been an interesting camp so far. Each day I see our team taking another stride forward, with the defense still continuing to unleash pain and dominance and the offense progressing to become a real threat in this conference.
On the offense of side of the ball, all the veterans have stepped up, with Terrence Austin leading the way along with Taylor Embree and Nelson Rosario. I think Christian Ramirez and Derrick Coleman are looking good. As for young guys, Randall Carroll is very impressive, with speed comparable to many players in the league. Ricky (Marvray) is looking real solid and Morrell (Presley) is improving day by day, looking more like a potential All-Pac-10 player.
On defense, we have everyone making plays all over the field, but the standouts have been Akeem Ayers, who is showing athleticism in pass coverage and run responsibility; Rahim Moore, in coming up to hit and paying over the top in coverage and Aaron Hester in coverage. Andrew Abbott and Courtney Viney have both been looking solid in coverage and battling it out to be in the corner rotation. Of course, Brian Price and Reggie Carter are forces to be reckoned with, making plays whenever we need them to make plays.
Overall, it has been a competitive camp and much needed to help start us on the journey of national contention. I grow more excited as the days pass and we move towards the September 5th game against San Diego State.
This been the first time in a long time that I haven't really seen my family, my friends or my girlfriend very much and that has been an adjustment because I miss them dearly. But they know it is business time. Seeing them will come later,
Off the field, in the little free time available, I have caught up on much needed sleep and played numerous video games. I have been working on my Tiger Woods 10 skills and challenging the likes of Christian Yount, Danny Rees, Jeff Locke, Taylor Embree and Frank Guzman. I believe I can take them all with the eagles and birdies streaming in on most of the holes. But they get me every once in a while. The other game is NCAA 10, where it is always about bragging rights and intense battles on the sticks.
Well, that sums up my week. If our progress continues and what Coach Gansz calls `on-going skill development' persists, this could be a special year and the start of many more winning seasons to come.
Please come support the Bruins football team of 2009 in our night scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 22nd. The live action scrimmage will test our progress this camp! It should be a good one and you will see speed and big plays made on both sides of the ball
I hope all is well and you enjoying these past days of sunshine and happiness! And May God Bless you all! Take care.
