Assistant Coaches: Leslie Tuiasosopo, Jose Gandara

Picked the favorite to win the league title in the 2009 Pac-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, Washington is loaded at every position and, should not only contend for a Pac-10 Championship, but a national title as well. After falling short of the national semifinal last season, the Huskies return six starters including second team All-American and All-Pac-10 senior libero Tamari Miyashiro and third team All-American junior setter Jenna Hagglund. The return of Hagglund will allow for many points at the net this season. Last year, she led the Pac-10 in assists (12.17 aps) and ranked second in the NCAA. Points from the outside position will not be a problem as the Huskies return their top four attacking outside hitters. Leading the way is junior Becky Perry, who led the team and ranked fifth in the Conference with 3.77 kps last season. Seniors Jill Collymore (2.78 kps) and Airial Salvo (2.88 kps) and junior Kindra Carlson (3.23 kps) will be major contributors this season. UW will be equally strong on defense in 2009. For the second-straight season, Miyashiro was Volleyball Magazine's Defensive Player of the Year. She led the Conference in digs with 586 (5.14 dps) and needs 174 digs to become UW's all-time career digs leader. Last season, the team recorded the least number of reception errors, 67, the fewest by any team in the Conference. With this much talent and experience returning, the Huskies are looking to bring the city of Seattle, as well as head coach Jim McLaughlin, their second national championship since 2005.

    • Sept. 11 - Washington vs. Minnesota, 3:00 p.m. PT
    • Sept. 12 - Washington vs. Florida, 3:00 pp.m. PT
    • Oct. 10 - Washington at Stanford, 7:00 p.m. PT (FSN)
When the Huskies travel to Tampa, Fla. for the Tampa Twice Tournament, they will be tested by two teams ranked in the 2009 Volleyball Magazine's Preseason Poll - No. 8 Minnesota and No. 9 Florida. In 2008, the Gators fell to Stanford, 3-0, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament, while the Gophers were knocked out of the tournament in the second round by Iowa State, 3-1. The matchup on Oct. 10 promises to be a great one when it puts the 2009 preseason favorites to win the Pac-10, Washington, up against the three-time defending Pac-10 Champions, Stanford. In order for the Huskies to be the champs, they will have to go through the champs.
