Follow the Bears on Universalsports.com During the World Championships

Aug. 24, 2009

BERKELEY - For the third year in a row, Universal Sports will partner with the International Federation of Rowing Associations (FISA) to broadcast the World Rowing Championships from Poznan, Poland. California alumni Mara Allen and Erin Cafaro are among the Golden Bear rowers competing in the world championships, which run from Aug. 23-30.

Allen and Cafaro are competing in the women's eight. Cafaro rowed with the women's eight that won gold at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Cafaro, who graduated in 2006, is one of five returning rowers from that gold-medal boat. This is the fourth year that Cafaro has been selected to the U.S. senior team, while this will be the first appearance in the world championships by Allen, who graduated in 2008. Both had previously represented the U.S. at the Under-23 World Championships, and were key members of Cal's 2005 and 2006 NCAA championship teams.

Former Cal coach Kate Bertko will also be making her first appearance in the world championships. Bertko, who coached during the 2006-07 season, is racing in the women's quadruple sculls.

UniversalSports.com will provide a live, global webcast of the World Rowing Championships. More information, as well as highlights, full-length videos, photos, breaking news and more are available at UniversalSports.com/rowing.
