Aug. 24, 2009

SEATTLE - The Washington men's soccer team will play their final pre-season tune-up on Tuesday against Trinity Western at 4 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field before the regular season begins Sept. 1.

The Huskies fared well in their first exhibition match last week, tying the semi-pro Seattle Wolves, 2-2, behind goals from senior Daniel Phelps and freshman Quinton Beasley.

UW will look to turn up the intensity on Tuesday as they prepare for the regular season opener Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 3:30 p.m. at Seattle University. The Huskies will play their first four games on the road before their regular-season home opener on Sept. 17 against Portland.

The Huskies received solid play from their back line and goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins in keeping the Wolves scoreless in the first half last week. The Huskies also saw solid play from sophomore Brent Richards, who was the team's leading goal-scorer in 2008 and led UW with three shots last Wednesday along with junior Brad Keller.

UW will have their hands full with Trinity Western, is a Christian liberal arts university located in Langley, B.C. The Spartans have won three national championship medals (silver in 2008 and 2006 and bronze in 2005), and have finished as Canada West regular season champions in 2003, 2004 and 2007. They also won three straight Canada West Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007, before finishing with silver in 2008.
