VOLLEYBALL SEASON OPENS, SIX PAC-10 TEAMS RANKED AMONG TOP 14

Over the last eight seasons, Pac-10 volleyball has dominated the collegiate scene as it has sent 16 teams to the Final Four and captured five national titles. During that time, the league has posted an impressive 806-221 (.785) non-conference record. Over that same span, 44 different student-athletes combined to garner 81 AVCA All-America accolades. With seven AVCA All-Americans returning and 13 Volleyball FAB 50 recruits added to this year's Pac-10 rosters, the league is determined to continue its successful ways in 2009 ... WASHINGTON, which has finished second in each of the last two seasons, has been tabbed by the Pac-10 coaches as the team to beat this season, followed by CALIFORNIA and defending Pac-10 champion STANFORD ... Six Pac-10 teams are among the AVCA Preseason Top 25 - No. 4 Washington, No. 5 Stanford, No. 6 California, No. 9 UCLA, No. 12 USC and No. 14 OREGON... Here's this week's schedule:

THE COACHES PRESEASON POLL

The WASHINGTON Huskies were picked to win their third Pac-10 title, according to a poll of the Pac-10 women's volleyball coaches. The Huskies captured Pac-10 titles in 2004 and 2005. Here's a look at how the coaches see the 2009 Pac-10 race (first place votes in parentheses):

• Can the Pac-10 duplicate early season success achieved in 2008? The league opened last season with a 20-6 record (.769) through the first week of action.

 

• Fear the underclassmen... Pac-10 rosters include 49 freshmen, 45 sophomores, 32 juniors and 32 seniors.

 

• Pac-10 teams work fast... Last season, Pac-10 teams were 111-26 (.810) in non-conference play. Of those 137 matches, 76 lasted just three sets where the Pac-10 posted an impressive 68-8 record (.895).

 

• Bring it on... In order to prepare for the rigorous Pac-10 schedule, league teams schedule tough non-conference matches. Of the 117 non-conference tilts on the 2009 docket, 41 are against teams who competed in last year's NCAA Tournament.
