Cochran's Two Goals, Assist Lead Huskies To 4-1 Exhibition Win
Aug. 25, 2009
SEATTLE - In their final exhibition tune-up before the regular season kicks off next week, the Washington men's soccer team looked sharp in defeating Trinity Western, 4-1, Tuesday in front of 285 fans at Husky Soccer Field.
Senior Taylor Cochran scored two goals - both of which came in the opening seven minutes - and added an assist as UW jumped out early and never looked back.
UW head coach Dean Wurzberger experimented with a new formation which put Cochran - a midfielder - in a more attacking position, a decision which more than panned out.
The senior took a cross from the right side from freshman Ryan Moore and directed it into the lower right corner of the net at the 3:28 mark of the first half to put the Huskies out front early. Just over three minutes later, Cochran settled a ball well outside the box and blasted a shot from 30 yards out into the upper left corner to give UW a big cushion.
The Huskies continued to control the attack throughout the game, racking up 24 shots to Trinity Western's nine.
'We made progress from the last game. We defended better and we were in charge of the game and scored some goals early, which was great,' Wurzberger said. 'Center midfield was an area we really needed to work on based on the last game and Taylor had a break out game. He's never scored like that before. We had the anchor man in there and it freed Taylor up to join in the attack and that really suited his game. It was satisfying to see Brent and Matt get goals as well and everyone got into the game so all in all it was just what you look for in a practice game. We're ready to go into the regular season.'
Cochran would contribute again early in the second half when he sent a long through ball from the right side to a streaking Brent Richards, who hit the back of the net for the Huskies third goal of the game in the 52nd minute.
Trinity Western, which hails from British Columbia, got on the board in the 88th minute on a goal from Nathan Pogue.
Senior Rylan Hawkins played the majority of the game in goal for UW, making one save and not allowing a goal in just over 57 minutes of play.
Cunningham and Cochran led the Huskies with five shots each while Moore and Richards got off three shots each.
The Huskies begin regular season play next week when they face cross-town rival Seattle University at Championship Field on Sept. 1 at 4 p.m.
