Velasquez Wins LXIII Medellin Open
Aug. 25, 2009
Oregon State men's golfer Diego Velasquez won the LXIII Medellin Open in Medellin, Colombia. Velasquez led the tourney from start to finish winning by seven strokes.
'I held the lead from beginning to end and never let go,' Velasquez said. 'I had a comfortable margin through the first two days and I might have let go a bit, but I liked that I was able to hold on and finish the job.'
Velasquez won in his hometown for the first time in three years after shooting 65, 66, 72, 74 - 277 to earn the victory. After two great opening rounds, Velasquez was in prime position entering the weekend.
'I hit the ball really well throughout the tournament and took advantage of the greens that were soft. I was able to play much more aggressively, attaching quite a few pin placements. I tried to keep my approach shots close to the hole and made some key par putts when needed.'
'I've been playing well this summer, but I hadn't taken advantage to finish the job on a couple occasions, so I'm glad that I did it this week! I've been working hard with my swing coach and I'm ready for the fall season.'
