Gym Dawgs Begin Fall Training
Aug. 27, 2009
SEATTLE - The Washington gymnastics team reported to campus earlier this week for fall workouts in preparation for the 2010 season.
The Huskies will have extensive conditioning work along with a heavy lifting schedule, while team training begins on Sept. 14.
'Today was fantastic,' head coach Joanne Bowers said of Tuesday's workout. 'I appreciate all the effort the junior class put in to make the first day for the freshmen special. Watching our freshmen getting used to our equipment and watching our upperclassmen work with the freshmen got me so excited about our future. Hopefully we keep up the intensity each day and get better each day.'
UW posted their highest Pac-10 finish in six years last season when they placed fourth to advance to the NCAA West Regionals. Under the guidance of Bowers, UW has advanced to the West Regionals in three straight seasons and have sent individuals to NCAA Nationals in two of the last three years.
The Huskies have a difficult schedule in 2010 as their first five meets all come against teams ranked in last year's final top-15. The Huskies have a young squad with no seniors, but have enough experience to compete with the best in the Pac-10. The Huskies return Samantha Walior, a first-team All-Conference selection on floor, along with Hatsune Akaogi, who was named second-team All-Pac-10 in the all-around.
