Cougars Complete Fall Camp with Scrimmage

PULLMAN - The Washington State University football team completed its final scrimmage of Fall Camp Friday at Martin Stadium, and the Cougar quarterbacks continued to impress.
Of the three quarterbacks taking snaps, none threw an interception, and the two listed atop the depth chart - redshirt senior Kevin Lopina and redshirt sophomore Marshall Lobbestael - combined to complete 16-of-24 passes for 211 yards.
Lopina completed 9-of-11 for 123 yards, and fired a seven-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Gino Simone. Lobbestael completed 7-of-13 for 88 yards, while redshirt sophomore Dan Wagner went 1-for-7.
Simone led all Cougar receivers with four receptions and 56 yards in addition to the score, and accounted for the longest play of the scrimmage - a 41-yard reception from Lopina. Redshirt sophomore Nick Proen (28 yards), sophomore Kevin Norrell (23 yards) and redshirt junior Randy Johnson (23 yards) caught two passes each.
Defensively, redshirt freshman linebacker Josh Garrett, senior defensive end Kevin Kooyman and freshman defensive end Travis Long each recorded a sack, while redshirt senior safety Xavier Hicks blocked a punt.
Junior kicker Nico Grasu converted his only field goal attempt, a 31-yarder, and went 2-for-2 on PATs. Redshirt junior punter Reid Forrest averaged 50.7 yards on three punts, including a 62-yarder downed at the two-yard line. All three punts were downed inside the 20.
The Cougars open the 2009 season against Stanford, Sept. 5 in Martin Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m., and the game will be televised by FSN Northwest.
