Mexico Beats USC 2-0 In Exhibition Play
Aug. 28, 2009
LOS ANGELES - The USC women's soccer team took on the Mexican National Team in an exhibition match on a hot day at McAlister Field on Friday. Tough play on both ends held the teams even through the majority of the first half, but Mexico was able to break the silence with a late first-half goal. Mexico's second goal also game in the final minutes of the next half, leaving the Women of Troy with a 2-0 loss in exhibition action. Ranked No. 12 in the nation, USC now turns to host its first official game of the season on Sunday (Aug. 30) at 3 p.m. against St. John's at McAlister Field.
Mexico opened the match with a couple early looks on goal, but both were blasted off their mark. USC countered with an attack in the 12th minute on a shot from Carly Butcher that was blocked and then a drive from Megan Ohai that went wide. Ohai got another look 10 minutes later, but that shot also was forced wide to leave things still scoreless. Kristin Olsen came up big again in goal with a save on a close-range shot by Mexico's Evelyn Lopez in the 28th minute to help hold the game at 0-0. In the 42nd minute of play, however, Mexico got deep on the Trojans as Monica Ocampo worked through the USC defense and went one-on-one with goalkeeper Kristin Olsen. Ocampo was able to put her shot past Olsen, getting Mexico on the board with a 1-0 lead as halftime came up.
USC switched up keepers for the second half, trading out senior Olsen for another senior, Brittany Massro. Massro got tested early with a booming shot, but she expertly knocked it over and out for the save. She racked up another solid save later, and soon USC was able to mount a dangerous attack of its own. Ashley Freyer picked off a Mexico defender and went deep, firing a shot that was saved by Mexico goalkeeper Erika Vanegas. The ball got loose, and Alyssa Davila recovered it on the end line and pushed in to the middle for Ohai, who got a strong foot on the ball only to have it partially blocked by a defender, sailing out of bounds for a USC corner kick. Massro would make back-to-back impressive saves on close-range Mexico strikes later in the half, but Mexico found a way to crack things again before the final horn. With 3:39 remaining, Evelyn Lopez found Tania Morales for a second Mexico goal as the national teamers pulled away for a 2-0 final win in exhibition play at McAlister Field.
USC holds an 0-1 overall record in the early goings of the 2009 season as the Trojans now turn to face their first official home game of the year. No. 12 USC faces St. John's at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 30) at McAlister Field.
