Aug. 28, 2009
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - A tough opening night for the Sun Devils Volleyball team saw 14 unforced errors spell a tough 3-0 loss to No. 17 Utah in the opening day of the Utah Classic. The Sun Devils fell 25-15, 25-20 and 25-21 in three sets as they fall to 0-1 to open the 2009 season.
The first set saw the Sun Devils attempts to shake off the rust, but the attempts fell short as they stumbled with unforced errors four of them service errors, giving the Utes an edge as they carried off a 25-15 win with 15 kills to ASU’s eight.
Set two saw ASU start to put it together as they collected ten kills with Sarah Reaves leading the way with three kills and two blocks as ASU’s defense held the line. Sonja Markanovich added to the set with two kills and three blocks of her own, but again unforced errors hurt ASU as they had five total in a 25-20 loss to drop 2-0 to Utah.
Set three saw ASU’s offense come to life as they posted 14 kills to Utah’s 13 with Sarah Reaves taking the reigns with six kills and an ace, but Utah’s defense also stepped up as they collected five blocks in the set. ASU again were their own worst enemies though with five unforced errors again in an even closer 25-21 loss to give Utah the sweep in the opening match of the 2009 season
Head Coach Jason Watson surmised the match stating, “We’re a program that has a long way to go, and one of the fundamentals we need to learn is to play well over a long period of time. Right now we show some great positives, but only in spurts, we need to learn to sustain it and stay on task.”
The Sun Devils will return to action tomorrow as the Utah Classic rolls on with A State playing two matches, their first against Cincinnati at 12 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. match against UC Irvine.
