Wetzel's Free Kick Gives Women's Soccer Win over UCR

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Junior Courtney Wetzel connected on a 30-yard free kick with just under three minutes remaining to give the Oregon State women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over UC Riverside in action on Friday night. The victory was the first of the season for the Beavers as they improved to 1-1-0 on the season while UC Riverside fell to 0-2-0 on the year.
Prior to Wetzel's game-winner, a pair of penalty kicks were the only tallies of the contest as Oregon State managed to get on the board first in the 28th minute. After a UC Riverside foul in the penalty area, senior captain Rachael Axon connected on the free kick for her first goal of the season to give the Beavers the early lead.
Oregon State held the lead heading into halftime; but, UC Riverside managed the equalizer in the 73rd minute as Denise Thomas connected on a penalty kick to tie the contest.
Wetzel would provide the game-winner just minutes later; however, as her free kick from 30-yards out allowed Oregon State to improve to 2-0-0 all-time against UC Riverside.
For the second consecutive contest, Oregon State controlled possession as the Beavers out-shot UCR, 17-9. Wetzel led the way for Oregon State with four shots as Melinda Ingalls and Megan Miller added two shots on goal for the Beavers.
Colleen Boyd picked up the victory with five saves as Jessica White made eight saves in goal for UC Riverside in the loss.
Oregon State will return to action on Sunday, August 30, as the Beavers travel to Northridge, Calif., to take on Cal State Northridge at 1:00 p.m.
