Arizona sweeps Belmont
Aug. 29, 2009
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A night after sweeping the Louisville Cardinals, the Arizona volleyball team swept the Belmont Bruins to improve its record to 2-0 on the young season.
The Wildcats, who had difficulties in 2008 winning on the road, so far have shown no signs of trouble as they beat the Bruins 25-20, 25-13 and 25-21.
Sophomore Dana Hutchinson led the way for the Cats with 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .571. Tiffany Owens recorded double-digit kills for the second consecutive match, tallying 10 this morning.
Other standouts for Arizona was the always reliable Paige Weber. Weber assisted on 32 kills and also had six digs.
In the first set, Arizona used a 7-2 run which was started when hitter Hutchinson recorded her first serving ace of the year. From there Arizona looked to be in control of match throughout.
The Wildcats showed their strength and talent in set two as they limited Belmont to just 13 total points. Then in set three, the Bruins led for the better part of the set but Arizona wouldn’t be denied in its quest for the sweep. Hutchinson alone had seven kills in the set and Weber dolled out 16 assists in the last set for the victory.
Now Arizona will look to rest up as the will take on Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. MST. Pittsburgh (2-0) topped Belmont last night in a match that went five sets. Then this morning the Panthers upset No. 18 Wichita State in three sets.
