Aug. 29, 2009
EAST LANSING, Michigan - Sophomore outside hitter Alex Jupiter (Hermosa Beach/Redondo Union HS) led with a team-high 11 kills Saturday as the No. 12 USC Women of Troy swept the North Carolina Tar Heels, 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-16), in day two action at the MSU Showcase.
The Trojans rebounded from a tough five-set loss last night to host Michigan State with a balanced attack as five players recorded eight or more kills.
Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Williams added 10 kills while hitting .600 (10-1-15) while Zoe Garrett and Kimmee Roleder chipped in nine kills apiece. Garrett had four blocks and hit .571 in the match (9-1-14) while Roleder tied her career high with four service aces. Sophomore setter Kendall Bateman had 36 assists and six digs for the Women of Troy.
Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland led North Carolina (1-1) with six kills in the match.
USC (1-1) broke away from a 10-8 lead in the first set with an 11-1 run, thanks to the trio of Roleder, Garrett and Geena Urango. North Carolina held most of the lead in the second set until Urango served up an ace as the Trojans took the 20-19 lead. Jupiter and Garrett used kills to put USC up by three and Roleder ended the set with another kill for the 2-0 lead.
In the final set, USC used a 5-1 run for the 11-6 advantage and would not look back as the Women of Troy committed just two hitting errors against 16 kills for a .500 clip.
USC will complete play in the MSU Showcase at 5:30 p.m. Eastern today with a match against Albany.
