Aug. 29, 2009
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The fifth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team was swept Saturday by Notre Dame, 22-25, 20-25, 21-25, in front of a sell-out crowd at the Shamrock Invitational at the Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Ind. The Fighting Irish improve to 2-0 as they have defeated Stanford for the first time in school history. The Cardinal drop to 1-1 on the season.
Junior outside hitter Cassidy Lichtman led the way offensively for Stanford for the second straight match, posting 13 kills, eight digs and four assists. Junior All-American Alix Klineman added 11 kills, hitting .385. As a team, Stanford hit .261, while Notre Dame hit an even .300.
Stanford earned the first two points of the first set on Notre Dame miscues. The first kill of the match for the Cardinal came from Lichtman to put Stanford up 3-2. Notre Dame would rally to go up 11-6, but the Cardinal would put together one of its own to pull within one. Klineman totaled four kills during the stretch. Consecutive attack errors by Notre Dame would tie the score at 16 all, but the Irish would once again increase its lead and go on to take the first set, 25-22.
Set two saw the score tie six times, including twice on blocks from Lichtman and senior middle blocker Janet Okogbaa. After a kill by Klineman, which tied the score at eight, Notre Dame pounded three straight points to take an 11-8 advantage. The Irish would go up by as many as five, but consecutive kills from Lichtman and Okogbaa would cut the Notre Dame lead to three at 17-14. Unfortunately, the Cardinal would fail to overcome the deficit and fall, 20-25, in set two.
Stanford opened the third set with three straight points, including a kill by Klineman and a block from red-shirt senior Alex Fisher and red-shirt sophomore Stephanie Browne. Errors from the Irish gave Stanford a 6-2 lead. Notre Dame would tie the set at 11-11 and again at 12-12, before posting four consecutive scores for a 16-12 advantage. The Cardinal was unable to recover and dropped the final set 21-25.
Up next, Stanford wraps up the Shamrock Invitational against Denver at 11 a.m. ET, Sunday at the Joyce Center. The Pioneers were swept by Notre Dame Friday and fell to LSU in five-set thriller on Saturday.
