Aug. 31, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. - Former Washington State University rower Sarah Waterfield is now a bronze medalist, after helping team Canada stroke to a third place finish in the women's four at the 2009 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland, Saturday.
The Canadian crew finished the 2,000 meter course with a time of 6:36.87, a mere 86 hundredths of a second behind second place finisher USA. The women's four final proved a tight race across the board, as the gold medal winning Netherlands finished approximately five seconds ahead of USA and fourth place Australia finished within a second of Canada and the Bronze.
Waterfield's former teammates and coaches at Washington State University are recognizing her recent post-collegiate success.
'We are really proud of her and happy to see her have success,' Washington State Head Rowing Coach Jane LaRiviere said. 'She is representing the Cougars very well.'
Waterfield, a native of Kingston, Ontario, completed her Cougar career in the spring of 2007 as a member of the varsity eight boat which was ranked as high as eighth nationally in 2006-07. Waterfield was also part of the WSU varsity eight which finished fourth at the 2006 NCAA Championships.
A two-time All-Pacific-10 Conference rower and two-time member of the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-West Region First Team, Waterfield was named first team All-America in 2006 and to the second team in 2007 by the CRCA.
Last summer Waterfield also represented Canada at the 2008 World Rowing Championships in Linz/Ottensheim, Austria and the year before she rowed for Canada at the 2007 FISA World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Strathclyde, Scotland.
