In preparation for the opening match, gostanford.com sat down with fifth-year senior T.J. Novak to discuss his return from injury, the goals for Stanford soccer this season and his post-Stanford plans.
You are returning from a season ending injury, how is your health?
'The injury I suffered last season was a torn hamstring, but currently I am completely healthy and ready to go.'
How has the team looked so far in practice and exhibition games?
'The practices have been very promising. Everyone is playing very competitively and confidently which has allowed us to maintain a high level and to progress as we prepare for the season.'
What are your personal goals for the season, what are your team goals?
'A personal goal for me is to stay healthy and to help the team in whatever role I am needed. As for team goals we are looking to compete for a Pac-10 championship and to make it to the NCAA tournament.'
How is the team different from last year?
'Probably the biggest difference is how our team is buying in to the system the coaches have presented us. In order to be successful a team needs this trust and our team has made great strides in trusting one another.'
What has been the greatest experience with Stanford soccer so far?
'The greatest experience with Stanford soccer has been the relationships I have built with my teammates and the coaches. The players and coaches are incredible people both on and off the field and it has really been special to establish relationships with them.'
What are your plans after the season, after Stanford?
'After the season I will finish the Co-terminal degree in Media Studies and will then pursue a degree in marketing or advertising.'
