Men's Soccer Set to Host OSU/Nike Challenge

Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team kicks off its season this weekend when it plays host to the OSU/Nike Challenge starting Friday Sept. 4, at 5:30 when it hosts San Jose State at Paul Lorenz Field.

The Beavers return the 2008 Pacific-10 Conference Freshman of the Year in Danny Mwanga who scored four goals in 11 games last year. Mwanga had a productive exhibition game against Trinity Western two weeks ago by scoring twice.

Oregon State lost five out of its six top point scorers and is returning 14 players from last years' roster. In addition to the 14 returners, 15 newcomers are joining the team for the 2009 campaign.

Steve Spangler will be between the posts this year. He played in eight games and started five of those last year. He posted a save percentage of .833 and a goals against average of 1.09 last year.

Cal State Bakersfield and Houston Baptist join San Jose State in the Challenge this year. CSU Bakersfield and Houston Baptist both lost their season openers to UC Santa Barbara and Central Arkansas respectively while San Jose State comes in after winning their season opener against UC Davis 4-1.

CSU Bakersfield and Houston Baptist will get things started Friday Sept. 4 at 3pm followed by the Beavers season opener at 5:30pm.

San Jose State is returning four-year starters Nick Cukar and Colby Moore who were the teams scoring and assist leaders from last year.

CSU Bakersfield is returning 10 starters from last year, all who saw significant playing time but their key loss is three-year starting goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski.

Houston Baptist leading returning goal scorer is Adi Mesic who amassed nine points on four goals and one assist last year.

San Jose State and Houston Baptist will face off on Sunday Sept. 6 at 11am and will be followed the contest between Oregon State and CSU Bakersfield in the challenge finale at 1:30pm.
