Sept. 2: Senior Janet Okogbaa
We have begun our 2009 season by welcoming four new additions to the Stanford Volleyball family. First, we have Hayley Spelman, an opposite from Las Vegas, Nev. She is definitely someone to look up to as the tallest member of our team, standing proud at a majestic 6-6. Next is Charlotte Brown, a middle blocker from Walnut Creek, Calif. She brings some British flavor to the team and often entertains us with BBC impersonations. Then we have Karissa Cook, a setter from Santa Cruz, Calif. She recently had us over to her home, where we had a delicious meal that left our taste buds exhilarated and our appetites more than satisfied. Last, but certainly not least, is Hannah Benjamin, a defensive specialist from San Diego. In late night games of Catch Phrase at the dorms, she has by far the most engaged/violent hand gestures I’ve ever seen. Dangerous, but effective.
In our second week of preseason, we went on a retreat in Santa Cruz to get to know each other better and have some fun time together outside of the gym. Unfortunately, a local fire sent us on an unanticipated and poorly lit 2-mile hike through the woods to the home where we were staying. The experience brought to mind the reality TV show Survivor. In the end there were minimal casualties, so it was a good time.
This past weekend we kicked off our season at the Shamrock Invitational at Notre Dame. It was nice to finally see another team on the other side of the net and we learned a lot about our team. This tournament really got us excited about how much we will improve throughout our season! Before heading back to the Bay Area we had some downtime in Chicago and we were able to enjoy the city and its shopping, playgrounds, and Ghirardelli ice cream sundaes. Now that we have returned to campus, it’s back to business and there’s a lot on the agenda before our next game against Florida, so stay tuned…
