ASU Men's Golf Ranked 6th in the Preseason by Golf World Magazine
Sept. 3, 2009
With the core of a team that made it to the Elite 8 at the 2009 NCAA Championships returning this season, Golf World Magazine has ranked the Sun Devils 6th in the nation; thus, setting the table for what the men's golf team hopes will be a remarkable 2010 campaign.>
The Sun Devils return their entire lineup from last year's NCAA Championships, except for Stephan Gross who turned pro. Thus, Arizona State will be led by an experienced group who fell just came short in the Elite 8 to eventual champion Texas A&M. This experienced group begins with Knut Borsheim, Jesper Kennegard, and Scott Pinckney. If the Sun Devils are to accomplish their lofty goals of winning the Pac-10 and National Championships this year, it's likely that the above upper-classmen will play a major role.
Also looking to contribute is Sophomore Chan Kim, who this summer became the first Sun Devil since Scott Johnson in 1996 to win the 43rd Pacific Coast Amateur with a 17-under 217 (67-69-67-68). Another golfer tearing up the summer circuit is junior James Byrne who posted wins at the Tennant Cup and the SolarSport East of Scotland Amateur Championship by shooting a 22-under-par 262 (65-63-67-67).
The road for the Sun Devils begins in September at the Olympic Fields Invitational in Chicago, Ill. with a preseason ranking of sixth in the country by Golf World Magazine.
