Cats Handle Nevada, 3-0

Sept. 4, 2009

TUCSON – The Arizona volleyball team kicked off its home schedule in similar fashion to its season opener last Friday in Louisville by sweeping its opponent 3-0.  This time Arizona (4-0) took care of Nevada (1-3) in straight sets as Dana Hutchinson led the Cats with nine kills in the first match of the 25th Wildcat Classic.

Pac-10 Player of the Week Tiffany Owens registered eight kills Arizona as the Wolf Pack could not over come the strong play of the Arizona outside hitters.

Paige Weber tallied 25 assists for the Cats which had a total hitting percentage of .328.  Redshirt Sophomore Kaylen Bannister was particularly impressive for Arizona in sets two and three as she finished with seven kills on 11 total attempts.

Arizona did not allow Nevada to break 20 point barrier. Elissa Ji had a team-high seven kills for the Wolf Pack as they couldn’t overcome Arizona’s power and were forced into many errors.

Arizona posted a season high 12 service aces.  Owens led all Cats with five individual aces followed by Weber and Whitney Dosty with two apiece.

Arizona will now rest up and take on Houston at 7 p.m. later this evening.  In game two of the Wildcat Classic, Houston will play Eastern Washington.
