Men's Soccer Falls Short Against No. 21 Saint Louis
Sept. 4, 2009
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Washington men's soccer team was unable to overcome a pair of first-half goals by No. 21 Saint Louis, falling 2-1 on the first day of the Nike Portland Invitational.
Senior Casey Cunningham tallied UW's lone goal in the 54th minute as the Huskies dropped to 1-1 on the season. Saint Louis is also 1-1.
The Billikens wasted no time jumping on top of the Huskies, getting a goal from Mike Roach in the fourth minute. Alex Johnston fed Roach in the box and Roach followed up his own deflected shot from six yards out to give Saint Louis the early lead.
Saint Louis increased its lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute when Beau Bellomy took a feed from the right side and sent the ball past UW senior Rylan Hawkins for the eventual game-winner.
The Huskies came out firing in the second half after managing just two shots in the first half and they were rewarded after they connected a couple passes which eventually led to Cunningham firing a shot from 20 yards out and finding the back of the net to cut into the lead.
But the Billikens proved too strong down the stretch, denying the Huskies the equalizer on their final five shots.
'We were very disappointed with our first half performance. Defensively we made some mistakes and we never had the possession that we wanted,' Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'Our passing and accuracy continues to be an issue. There was a good attempt by the guys to chase the game and they did it well, and we made some changes in the second half, trying to advance the ball up the field quicker and not take so many passes to build the play. That played to our strengths with our power and size up front and it led to us leveling the field in the second half and getting the goal. We had chances to equalize but weren't able to do that. Thankfully we found out a lot about our team today so we'll implement some changes before the game Sunday. The guys gave a good effort in the second half so we'll look to parlay that second half into a solid 90 minutes on Sunday.'
The Huskies get back on the pitch Sunday to wrap up play in the Nike Portland Invitational against 2008 NCAA Tournament team Virginia at Noon.
