Swenson Scores Two as Men's Soccer Takes Season Opener, 3-1
Sept. 4, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team took its season opener Friday night against San Jose State University 3-1 at Paul Lorenz Field.
Sophomore John Swenson led the way for the Beavers scoring his first goals of his career. Swenson saw limited action last year as a freshman only playing in nine games and attempting only two shots.
'Swenson does what he's supposed to do and gets in front of his man and knocks it home,' head coach Steve Simmons said. 'It really took the pressure of off us.'
Swenson's first goal brought the score to 2-0 when newcomer Alex Parker crossed the ball in front of the goal to the left hand side where Swenson knocked the ball in. Parker got the assist.
'We wanted to get some momentum going,' Swenson said. 'It's our home turf; we wanted to show the home crowd and the program that we were going to get back into it. We're looking to improve and be in every game.'
San Jose State (1-1-0) got on the board when Nick Curker scored his second goal of the season pulling the Spartans within one goal at 2-1.
Swenson gave the Beavers a little breathing room scoring his second goal of the night assisted by Parker making the score 3-1. Parker ended the game with the two assists.
The Beavers season opener was the second game in the OSU/Nike Challenge. Earlier Friday, Cal State Bakersfield defeated Houston Baptist University, 3-0.
The OSU/Nike Challenge continues Sunday Sept. 6 at 11am when Houston Baptist takes on San Jose State.
Oregon State returns to the field to conclude the challenge Sunday Sept. 6 with a first kick slated for 1:30pm.
