USC Cross Country Team Opens Season At CS Fullerton
Sept. 4, 2009
The USC women's cross country team will open its season at the CS Fullerton Invitational held on the Fullerton Golf Course in Fullerton, Calif. on Saturday (Sept. 5) at 6 p.m. The Trojans are entering just six runners in the meet which also features Azusa Pacific, Cal Poly, CS Dominguez, CS Fullerton, CS Los Angeles, CS San Bernardino, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, San Diego State, UNLV and Western Florida.
Five of USC's six runners will be competing in their first race for the Trojans as junior Zara Lukens will be joined by freshmen Christy Ambrosini, Abigail Gregg, Theresa Kurth, Kathleen Moloney and Kelly Owen.
'It is a good chance for our freshmen to see what college running is all about,' said USC cross country head coach Tom Walsh. 'They've trained hard all summer long and the first two weeks of the school year and they are eager to get to racing and see where they are at.'
Most of USC's returning runners are being held out of this race and coach Walsh expects that Azusa Pacific, CS Fullerton and Loyola Marymount will be fighting for the team title at the meet.
The Trojans are coming off a successful season which saw the team win two consecutive meets for the first time since 1997. Much of the team returns and this first meet is a chance to evaluate where some of the new runners stand in preparation for the rest of the season.
'The most impressive part of the season so far has been the practices of our freshmen,' said Walsh. 'They seem to be competitive and eager and I'm pleased with the first two weeks of the season by the freshmen group.'
USC will be back at it again next weekend when they will run at the UC Irvine Invitational in Irvine, Calif. on Sept. 12 at 9 a.m.
