Volleyball Sweeps Through Day One of ASU Sheraton Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Volleyball hit new heights on Friday as the Sun Devils hit .398 on the day while sweeping both Charleston Southern and UTEP to open the ASU Sheraton Classic. ASU topped CSU 25-15, 25-11 and 25-13 and UTEP 25-23, 25-14 and 25-10 to push their record to 4-1 on the season.
The first match of the day for the Sun Devils saw a few more things fall into place as Katie Crosby stepped up to toss the rock for 59 assists in the match to lead A State to a .361 team attack percentage. Leading the assault was Sarah Reaves with 18 kills, but Sofie Schlagintweit also posted 16 kills for a .433 attack percentage as the Sun Devil O clicked into place.
ASU came out swinging in the first set to put up a .444 attack percentage with Sofie Schlagintweit in the forefront with five kills for a .500 attack percentage with Katie Crosby’s 15 assists pushing ASU to a decisive 25-15 win. Set two saw ASU shake up the line-up and struggle with control as eight attack errors doomed the Devils in a rough 25-15 loss.
Set three saw ASU take the reigns again as they exploded out of the gates to crush a season-high .654 attack percentage as they hit cruise control in the third through a 25-11 set to take the 2-1 lead. The fourth set saw ASU pull back the throttle a bit as they kept a steady .314 team attack percentage through the set to keep the pace steady as they sealed the win with a 25-13 win. Sarah Reaves rang up seven kills in the set with Katie Crosby dishing out 17 assists to finish ASU’s third win on the year.
The second match on the day slated the Sun Devils against the undefeated Miners of UTEP who entered the match with a 4-0 record, which A State feared not as they came out swinging at the bell notching a .367 team attack percentage with Sarah Reaves and Sofie Schlagintweit putting away nine kills combined with Cat Highmark conducting the masterpiece with 12 assists as ASU took a 25-23 win.
Set two saw A State step up to shut it down with a .406 offensive attack mark with Sofie Schlagintweit swinging for the fences with a .500 attack percentage and eight kills, while Paige Mittelstaedt contributed to the cause with four kills and two block assists en route to a 25-14 showcase. Set three was saw A State click on all cylinders as they collected three five consecutive point rallies and two four point rallies as ASU hit .650 en route to a 25-10 win to seal the deal.
The ASU Sheraton Classic concludes tomorrow with matches at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. as UTEP takes on Charleston Southern at 11 a.m. and Idaho State takes on ASU at 1 p.m. in Tempe at Wells Fargo Arena.
