Womens Soccer Cruises to Win over Nevada
Sept. 4, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior Red Nixon scored a pair of goals and the Oregon State women's soccer cruised to its third straight victory as the Beavers defeated Nevada, 4-0, in action at Paul Lorenz Field on Friday night. With the win, Oregon State improved to 3-1-0 on the year while Nevada dropped to 0-4-0 with the loss.
'The team is playing extremely hard and I like the way we have been improving from game to game,' head coach Linus Rhode said. 'We are starting to make the most of our scoring opportunities and the team is really working hard each time out. I was proud of the team effort tonight.'
Oregon State put the game away before the break as the Beavers found the back of the net three times in the first 45 minutes. Ashley Seal connected on the game-winner in the 23rd minute as the sophomore collected a long cross from defender Brittany Galindo and struck a low shot past a diving keeper for the first goal of the match.
Nixon followed with her first of two goals with a blast from 25-yards out in the 31st minute. On a loose ball, Nixon connected from long range and found the lower-left hand corner of the net to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.
The senior would strike again just six minutes later as Seal found her in the middle of the penalty area for a sliding shot into the right-hand corner of the goal. Chelsea Buckland added an assist on the play as Nixon notched her eighth career goal.
Oregon State controlled the pace the rest of the game as the Wolf Pack did not threaten to break through on the scoreboard. Buckland put the finishing touches on the win as she connected for her team-leading third goal of the season in the 82nd minute.
Ashley Wood picked up the shutout victory for Oregon State, recording two saves in 90 minutes of work. The shutout was the third of her career and the first of the season for Oregon State. Marie Cove took the loss after allowing four goals while making seven stops.
For the contest, Oregon State out-shot Nevada, 22-6, as the four goals were the most in a game for the Beavers since an 8-0 win over Lamar on Sept. 16, 2007.
Oregon State will return to action on Friday, Sept. 11, when they travel to Eugene, Ore., to face Seattle at 4:30 p.m.
