Sofie Schlagintweit Earns MVP Honors as Volleyball Sweeps Through ASU Sheraton Classic
Sept. 5, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz. – Without dropping a single set on the weekend, the Sun Devil Volleyball team tore through the 2009 ASU Sheraton Classic this weekend, wrapping the tournament with a 25-16, 25-16 and 25-16 sweep of the Idaho State Bengals Saturday afternoon in Tempe to take the tournament crown. Sarah Reaves and Paige Mittelstaedt were named to the All-Tournament Team along with MVP, Sofie Schlagintweit as they led the Sun Devils to their current 4-1 record after two weeks.
Set one didn’t see A State come out with a mission as they had for the beginning of the tournament as they hit only .188 combined but Paige Mittelstaedt and Malia Marquardt held down the middle for two block assists apiece while ASU took advantage of 10 unforced errors by the Bengals to take the set 25-16.
Set two saw A State get back to business in the offense department as they crushed a .591 attack percentage with 15 kills in 22 attacks with Sarah Reaves showing her vertical as she killed five of her seven attacks for a .714 average. She also got it done on D as well as she collected two blocks to help stifle the Bengals in another 25-16 win.
To finish the match, Reaves kept her momentum into the last set, knocking down eight kills as Marina Mercer came in to assist on 12 kills in the set while the Devil D played some solid net, collecting 5.5 blocks in the set to take another 25-16 win and close out the tournament.
On the day, Jason Watson commented that, “I felt we got better as the match went on. We have talked about consistency of effort and emotion throughout the duration of a match and not letting it lag, and we’re progressing there. It’s good to see some return on that work.”
