Wildcat men, women take second in NAU
Sept. 5, 2009
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The UA men’s and women’s cross country teams opened up the 2009 season Saturday at the 29th Annual George Kyte Classic hosted by Northern Arizona University at Buffalo Park in Flagstaff, Ariz. Battling through a storm that pounded the course over the past couple days, both squads came together for respectable runners-up finishes in the final team standings.
The teams – running for the most part without their top runners - highlighted their youth as it was primarily freshmen athletes that led the way. On the women’s side, freshman and Tucson high school product Melanie McGrath led the way with her seventh place finish among collegiate competitors on the 5,000-meter course, finishing in a time of 18:16.70.
Right behind her was fellow freshman Chloe Allen who finished in 18:22.1 rounding out the top-10 and finishing eighth as far as the collegiate athletes were concerned. Also scoring points for the Wildcats were Leandra Treusch (18th, 18:50.6), Alexandra Myers (20th, 19:06.0) and Megan Meyer (21st, 19:26.0) – all freshmen on the UA team.
In fact, the only athlete entering competition for the Wildcats that was not a freshman was sophomore Amanda Beckham.
The women scored 65 points overall and finished second to a Northern Arizona squad that swept the home meet by winning the men’s side as well.
On that men’s side, the Arizona squad only had five athletes on the starting line but that was enough for them to earn a second place team finish as well.
Junior Zack Hauer was the first Wildcat across the line as he took home a tenth place overall finish in 26:10.2 across 8,000-meters, though he was fifth among athletes competing attached to a college. Senior Brian MacArthur was not far behind, finishing in 26:35.0 to take home 15th place.
Freshmen Noe Ramirez (17th, 26:42.3) and Rory McLeod (21st, 26:59.9) were the next Arizona athletes across the line and sophomore Greg York rounded out the scoring with a 29th-place finish in 27:42.0.
The UA team will take a weekend off between returning back to action September 18th as they host their own home meet with the Dave Murray Invitational at the Dell Ulrich Golf Course in Tucson.
