UA Soccer to host Marriott University Park Tournament

Marriott University Park Tournament Schedule:


Friday, September 11:

Rutgers vs. San Diego 5:00 p.m.


Arizona vs. Brown 7:30 p.m.

Sunday September 13: 

San Diego vs. Brown 11:00 a.m.

Arizona vs. Rutgers 7 p.m.


Marriott University Part Tournament: This weekend, the Wildcats ill be hosting the Marriott University Part Tournament at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium. Joining Arizona are Brown, Rutgers, and the University of San Diego.


Arizona is currently 1-3-1 after snapping a 2 game losing streak last Sunday against Old Dominion to get their first win of the season.


In the final game of the Sun Devil Desert Classic, in Tempe, Sophomore Renae Cuellar scored both goals early in Sunday’s match, and with red shirt senior Devon Wharf guarding the goal, the Wildcats were able to hold off Old Dominion’s second-half comeback attempt to in 2-1.


For their strong play throughout the weekend, senior Samantha Drees and freshman Karli Hedlund joined Cuellar on the Sun Devil Desert Classic All-Tournament team.


About the Bears: The Brown Bears come to Tucson after losing their season opener 5-0 to Boston College last Friday. The Bears are led in the net by seniors Brenna Hogue and Steffi Yellin.


About the Scarlet Knights: Rutgers is currently 4-0-1, coming off their best opening start in 13 years. Rutgers is currently ranked No. 17 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Poll, back in this week after dropping out the week before. Against Penn State, Rutgers GK Erin Guthrie notched her 35th shutout of her career, breaking the previous school record, that held for 17 years, by Olympian Saskia Webber.


About the Toreros: University of San Diego (3-2-1) returns to Tucson with former Wildcat Jackie Zinke. The Toreros will take on Rutgers after a 3-0 loss to Ohio State last Friday.


All about the freshmen and sophomores: The Wildcat freshman and sophomores outnumber the juniors and seniors 12-8, with Alex Smith, Brittany Berger, Amy Steiner, Kristin Strother, Renae Cuellar, Karli Hedlund, Itzel Rodriguez, Jessica Culver, Ariel Boulicault, Kristin Magyar, Kat Leibbrandt, and Susan Melendez participating in the seasons’ opening matches.


Head Coach Dan Tobias: Dan Tobias led his team to a 9-11 record in 2008, giving him a 55-59-8 record in his six years at Arizona. Tobias coached the Wildcats to the program's first appearance in the Sweet 16 in 2005. In 2004, Tobias led the Wildcats to a 15-6 overall record. Additionally, his 6-3 Pac-10 record gave Arizona its first Pac-10 championship in history of the program and was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the second time.
