Cougar Soccer Nips No. 18 BYU
Sept. 10, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Carly Dobratz's second half goal lifted Washington State to a 2-1 victory over No. 18 BYU in nonconference women's soccer, Thursday at Lower Soccer Field.
Dobratz received a free kick in the box from sophomore Jacquelyn Roth, turned and fired a shot that ricocheted off a BYU defender and rolled across the goalline in the 68th minute.
'I am obviously delighted with the win,' WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'We know BYU is a very good team. To go a goal down and bounce back to ultimately win the game is a good moment for us.'
BYU (3-2-1) took a 1-0 at 9:29 when Carlee Payne received a pass from Jessica Ringwood just inside the box on the left side and beat WSU (4-2-0) goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo to the far post.
The host Cougars got on the board just 67 seconds before halftime when Roth played a long ball to senior Kiersten Dallstream as BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson came out to challenge. Dallstream got to the ball first and slipped it past Olson for the equalizer from 12 yards out.
In the 54th minute, freshman Melanie Johnston shot was blocked in front and Dallstream's rebound effort from the left side trickled just wide of the right post.
Trailing 2-1, Payne blasted a shot from 22 yards out that caromed off the left post in the 74th minute. WSU had the final good scoring chance, but Olson made a nifty save of Johnston's bid for a goal off a corner kick in the 83rd minute.
Washington State travels to Texas for a 5:30 p.m. Pacific match, Friday, Sept. 18.
